St. Mary’s Montessori Preschool
St. Mary's Montessori Preschool is devoted to and designed especially for the young child, ages 3 - 5.
Our environment in specifically designed to encourage the young child to experience learning at his/her own pace, taking from the curriculum that which is needed to construct his own personality. Children spend their day engaged in fascinating, age appropriate activities while experiencing what they are individually, developmentally ready to learn. They also learn prayers, values and reverence for God.
In our Montessori Preschool at St. Mary’s, we use materials modeled from the original ones designed by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, who closely observed young children in her poverty area school discovering that there are specific times when a child most easily learns language, math concepts, writing, and other skills. As Montessori continued to make discoveries about young children, she developed materials, which were designed to teach specific skills.
There is a Montessori certified teacher in each of our classrooms, and the assistants are trained in the use of Montessori materials. The teacher introduces each piece of equipment to the child, and the child demonstrates that he understands how to use that “work.” Then the child is able to select that particular work, or any other materials that have been introduced to him. If a child shows particular interest in a “work,” the teacher will introduce it to the child. When the teacher determines that the child is ready for more advanced learning, she will introduce new work. Each child progresses at his/her own pace taking from the curriculum all that is needed to construct his/her own personality.
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd / Atrium
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a highly acclaimed approach to the religious formation of children, rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the Church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an “Atrium,” a room specially prepared for them which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use to ponder the story of Christ and the life of the Church. Elements of the Mass, a topographical map of the Land of Israel and a timeline for the History of the Kingdom of God are just a few of the experiences the children encounter in atriums that serve children aged 3 to 6 (Level I: Montessori and Kindergarten).
Each child in our Montessori Preschool is treasured as a gift from God. Our school is rich history and tradition, clean and well cared for, and equipped with many choices of materials designed specifically for a child to use. Our teachers love and enjoy working children and they encourage exploration and celebrate each child’s successes. We welcome you to visit our school and take a tour of the Montessori Program.
